Eine gesicherte Umgebung unter Windows? So eine Art chroot? Sandboxie verspricht einen Layer zu bilden zwischen Applikationen, die in der Sandbox laufen, und dem Dateisystem. Wird ein Prozess in der Sandbox gestartet, schreibt er nicht direkt auf das Dateisystem, sondern auf den Layer. Beendet man den Prozess, bleiben keine Spuren des Prozesses auf dem Dateisystem zurück.

Nunja, auf dem Dateisystem. Über den Speicher trifft die FAQ keine Aussage.

The Patent and Trademark Office is starting a pilot project that will not only post patent applications on the Web and invite comments but also use a community rating system designed to push the most respected comments to the top of the file, for serious consideration by the agency’s examiners.

Auf einem Reputationssystem basierend soll auf einer wiki-ähnlichen Website jeder seine Meinung zu jeder Anmeldung kundtun können - und je höher diese Meinung von den anderen Teilnehmern geschätzt wird, desto “wichtiger” wird sie und desto eher wird sie von den staatlichen Gutachtern wahrgenommen.

“I’m sure there will be a degree of gaming. There always is,” Kappos said.

Kappos ist als Berater von IBM an der Umsetzung beteiligt. Nicht jedes Unternehmen möchte, dass seine Patente veröffentlicht werden, bevor sie ihnen zugesprochen wurden. Dennoch fanden sich 250 “Freiwillige”, die in der Pilotphase teilnehmen:

Under the pilot project, some companies submitting patent applications will agree to have them reviewed via the Internet. The list of volunteers already contains some of the most prominent names in computing, including Microsoft, Intel, Hewlett-Packard and Oracle, as well as IBM, though other applicants are welcome.

In wie weit das USPTO auf die Meinung Dritter achten wird, steht in den Sternen — andererseits wird die Vorabveröffentlich von Patenten hoffentlich dazu beitragen, die Patentpolitik von Unternehmen genauer in Augenschein nehmen zu können. Und vor allem: vielleicht wird sie die Diskussion um Patente neu entfachen und die Sinnlosigkeit/Schädlichkeit mancher Patente aufzeigen können.

PS: Richtig interessant, aber im Moment noch undenkbar, wäre die Teilnahme von Pharmakonzernen an diesem Verfahren.
